Ethos, Logos and Pathos Analysis

Mr. Collin's Proposal
Ethos:

  • He comes recommended by his "Noble patroness Lady Catherine de Bourgh!"
  • Mr. Collins is well off in life and could support Elizabeth. "My situation in life, my connection with the family of de Bourgh, are circumstances highly in my favor."
  • He's also a clergyman so he'd have to make a good husband, "To set the example of matrimony in his parish."
Pathos:

  • The man believes he loves her, "But to assure you, in the most animated language, of the violence of my affections!"
  • Tries to manipulate Elizabeth into returning affections because of her refusal, "I must attribute it to your wish of increasing my love by suspense, in the usual manner of elegant females."
  • Uses his own emotion to attempt to draw her in
Logos

  • Comes prepared with a logical list, " Perhaps it would be advisable for me to state my reasons for marrying."
  • Observes that Elizabeth will most likely be proposed to again, "Consider that it is by no means certain that another offer of marriage may be made to you."
  • Finds a plausible reason to continue asking Elizabeth to marry him, despite her protests, "I understand that young ladies often reject the addresses of the man they mean to accept."

  1. I like the appeal to avoid the freshman 15. I was just wondering how you would use imagery to describe running? I'm sure you can, I'm just not picturing it right now.

  2. I like how you mentioned using a mature tone, but remember that while making it mature you don't want it to seem boring.
